In the past, the sport of polo only permitted the use of ponies under 13 hands, or 54 inches, in height. The current incarnation of the sport places no limitations on the size of ponies, which can grow up to 58 inches in height and weight more than 1,000 pounds. Despite this lack of restrictions, polo ponies are valued for their speed and maneuverability, traits that tend to favor smaller animals. However, a polo pony must also possess intelligence and enough strength to carry a rider over the course of a game.
Arabian blood horses, quarter horses, and western range horses generally possess many of the characteristics prized in a polo horse. Contrary to popular belief, there is no recognized breed specifically used for the sport of polo. Audiences may confuse a team of polo ponies for a new breed, as many lack manes and tails. This does not signify a particular breed but is, rather, a safety precaution, implemented to avoid dangerous tangles.
